More than five decades of building, pioneering and creating value
For more than five decades, NICO has evolved from a pioneering insurance company into one of Malawi's leading diversified financial services groups. Our history is defined by a consistent ambition: to identify opportunities, build institutions, expand access to financial services and create lasting value for our stakeholders and the economies we serve.
What began as the National Insurance Company in 1971 has grown into a Group with businesses spanning general insurance, life insurance, banking, pensions, asset management, corporate finance, property and technology, with operations and investments extending beyond Malawi.
From a pioneering insurance company into a Group built on trust, institutions and lasting value.
The beginning
NICO began operations in 1971 as the National Insurance Company, established as a composite insurance company. From the outset, the business played an important role in developing Malawi's insurance market and providing financial protection to individuals, businesses and institutions.
Pioneering Malawi's capital market
NICO became the first company to list on the Malawi Stock Exchange, marking a defining moment in both the Group's history and the development of Malawi's capital market.
The listing demonstrated NICO's commitment to transparency, broad-based ownership and the development of a stronger domestic investment market.
Taking Malawi beyond its borders
NICO expanded its operations into Zambia by establishing NICO Insurance Zambia, marking an important step in the Group's regional expansion and positioning NICO as one of Malawi's early multinational businesses.
Investing in infrastructure and commerce
NICO expanded beyond traditional insurance through investment in property and commercial infrastructure. The development of Chichiri Shopping Centre, with NICO as majority shareholder, demonstrated the Group's growing role in supporting commerce, investment and economic activity.
Restructuring for growth
A major transformation took place when the National Insurance Company was restructured to create a holding company structure comprising NICO Holdings, NICO General Insurance, NICO Life Insurance and NICO Technologies.
This restructuring established the foundation for NICO's evolution from an insurance company into a diversified financial services Group.
Banking, partnerships, pensions, property and fifty years of building Malawi's financial ecosystem.
Expanding into banking
NICO acquired a majority shareholding in NBS Bank, expanding its presence into banking and strengthening its ability to provide more comprehensive financial solutions to Malawians.
The investment also reinforced NICO's role in the development of Malawi's financial services sector.
Building strategic partnerships and regional reach
NICO continued to expand its regional footprint and deepen its portfolio of financial services businesses.
The Group established strategic partnerships with Sanlam, bringing additional technical expertise, capital, and regional capabilities to its insurance businesses.
These partnerships became an important part of NICO's journey towards building competitive, sustainable and professionally managed financial services businesses.
Another milestone in the capital market
NBS Bank was listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange, extending NICO's contribution to the development of Malawi's capital markets.
NICO's journey from being the first company to list on the Exchange to supporting the listing of another Group company reflects its longstanding role in broadening investment opportunities and strengthening the domestic capital market.
Deepening investment capability
NICO Asset Managers commenced operations, strengthening the Group's capabilities in investment management and creating opportunities for individuals, institutions and pension funds to participate more effectively in long-term investment.
Expanding into property and pensions
NICO established Eris Properties Malawi, broadening the Group's investment and property capabilities.
In the same period, NICO Pension Services commenced operations as a stand-alone company, strengthening the Group's presence in retirement planning and pension administration.
These developments reflected NICO's broader ambition to provide solutions across the financial lifecycle: from protection and savings to investment, retirement and wealth creation.
Creating new investment opportunities
ICON Properties Plc was listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange, creating another avenue through which investors could participate in professionally managed property assets.
The listing further demonstrated NICO's ability to develop businesses and assets that contribute to the growth and sophistication of Malawi's capital markets.
Celebrating 50 years
NICO celebrated 50 years of contributing to Malawi's economic and national development.
The milestone represented five decades of pioneering financial services, developing institutions, creating employment, supporting businesses and households, investing in infrastructure and building partnerships that have strengthened the country's financial ecosystem.
The anniversary also marked a renewed commitment to the future under the One NICO philosophy: recognising that the Group's greatest strength lies in bringing its businesses, people, capabilities and relationships together to create greater value.
NICO's history is ultimately a story of evolution without losing sight of purpose.
For more than 50 years, the Group has repeatedly moved into new spaces where it can create value: from insurance to banking, investments, pensions, property and technology; from Malawi into regional markets; and from traditional financial products towards broader, more integrated financial solutions.
Our history provides the evidence behind who we are today:
A pioneer.
A builder of institutions.
A catalyst for investment.
A partner to businesses and communities.
A contributor to national development.
And a Group continually evolving for the future.
Building the next NICO
The Group continued to evolve its portfolio and capabilities, including the establishment of NICO Capital as a stand-alone business.
Today, NICO's portfolio encompasses businesses across insurance, banking, pensions, asset management, corporate finance, property and technology, supported by strategic investments and partnerships across the region.
